The treatment will usually last approx. 1hour, but your acupuncturist will be able to confirm before your session. We advise to wear loose comfortable clothing and to have something to eat and drink prior to a treatment.

On arrival your acupuncturist will ask you about your medical history along with a host of other queries about your health and wellbeing. For example we may ask about your diet, sleep, digestion, emotions. Then we may take pulse readings from both wrists and take a look at your tongue.

Acupuncture points cover the entire body, but the most used points are below the elbows and below the knees. We may ask you to undress if we need to get to a certain area of the body (this is why wearing loose comfortable clothing is a good idea).

If you would prefer to not have a certain area of the body exposed (e.g. your tummy), you just need to let us know as there is always a work around. The most important thing is for you to feel safe and comfortable. The treatment will always be at your own speed.

The acupuncture needles will then be inserted and they will be left in for at least 20 mins so you can start to relax.

Acupuncture should not be painful. A mild tingle or dull ache when the needle is adjusted is normal. If you feel discomfort, inform your acupuncturist who may adjust or remove the needle. Many people do not feel the fine acupuncture needles being inserted.

Acupuncture might cause minor bruising at the needle site. Some may feel dizzy or tired after treatment, but this usually passes quickly. Inform your acupuncturist of any medications you are taking, such as anti-coagulants, to avoid side effects.

Moxibustion is an essential part of Chinese medicine which uses moxa, a substance prepared from mugwort leaves (Artemisia argyi). In moxibustion the moxa is placed either directly on the skin or held just above it, over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is lit and it smoulders slowly.
